Only Ranking Near Your Postcode? How to Reach Further

Google Maps favours businesses closest to the searcher, so most businesses rank strongly near their verified location and weaker further away. Service areas you set don’t override distance. To reach further, build a strong page for each town, earn reviews that mention those towns, and get local links and citations.

Why does Google Maps only show my business close to my address? Google ranks local results on three things: relevance, distance and prominence. Distance is measured from the person searching, so a plumber in Leicester will nearly always outrank you for “plumber near me” in Leicester if you’re based in Loughborough, even if your service area includes Leicester. This is how the Local Pack works for everyone, not a penalty on your profile.

Does adding more service areas help? Service areas tell customers where you work, but they don’t make Google treat you as being in those places. Adding 20 towns won’t widen your Maps reach on its own. Keep the list honest and focused on where you really take jobs.

What actually helps you reach further? – A strong page for each main town you serve, with real jobs, photos, local landmarks and the postcodes you cover, not a copy of the same page with the name swapped. – Reviews that mention the town, such as “fitted our boiler in Hinckley”. Ask customers to say where the job was. – Local links and citations, such as a local business association, a sports club you sponsor, or a town directory. – Relevance: the right primary category, services listed in full, and a description that says what you do.

Should I rely on Google Maps or on organic results for nearby towns? For towns more than a few miles away, the normal organic results (the blue links under the map) are often the more realistic target. A well-built town page can rank there even when you’ll never appear in that town’s map pack. Many service businesses get most of their out-of-town enquiries this way.

How do I measure whether it’s working? Track which towns your calls and enquiries come from, not just your ranking. A ranking grid that checks results at different points around you shows how far your Maps visibility reaches and whether it’s growing month by month.
