GBP Categories for Electricians: Win EV Charger, Panel and Generator Calls

GBP categories for electricians should match the work you most want more calls for.

Most electricians set their Google Business Profile category to “Electrician” and stop there. That gets you into general searches. But the jobs many shops want most, like EV charger installs, panel upgrades and generators, often go to competitors who tell Google clearly that they do that work.
What is the best primary GBP category for an electrician?
For most electrical contractors, the primary category should be Electrician. Google asks you to pick the category that completes “This business IS a…”. If general electrical service is most of your work, that is the right choice, even if you want more of one specialty.
Should I add an EV charger category?
Add one only if EV charger installation is a real, ongoing part of your business. Google’s guideline is to use as few categories as possible. If you install chargers every week, a matching category (check the exact name in your GBP dashboard) can help you show for those searches. If you’ve done two, it is not a category yet.
Categories electricians commonly review, if they fit your actual work:
- Electric vehicle charging station contractor or installer
- Generator shop or generator installation
- Lighting contractor
- Electrical installation service
- Solar energy contractor (only if you install solar)
Why does a competitor show up for “panel upgrade” and I don’t?
Because Google is matching more than your category. It also reads your GBP Services list, your website pages and what customers say in reviews. A shop with a dedicated panel upgrade page, “panel upgrade” in its GBP services, and reviews that mention a new 200-amp panel sends a much stronger signal than a homepage line saying “we do it all.”
How do I get more of the specific jobs I want?
- Pick 3–4 high-value jobs: for example panel upgrades, EV chargers, generators, rewiring.
- Build one detailed page per job on your website: what it costs to plan for, permits, how long it takes, and what homeowners should check first.
- Add each job to your GBP Services with a short, plain description.
- Post photos of those jobs on your profile (with customer permission).
- Ask those customers for a review and suggest they mention what you did.
Residential or commercial: does my category change?
The category usually stays “Electrician” either way. What changes is the rest of your marketing. Electricians on trade forums consistently say residential work comes from reputation, referrals and local search, while commercial work comes mostly from contractor relationships and bids. So residential shops get more from GBP and reviews. Commercial shops should treat their profile as a credibility check, not their main lead source.
Can adding the wrong category hurt me?
Yes. Categories you don’t really serve bring calls you can’t close and blur what Google thinks you are. Big edits like changing your primary category can also send a profile back into review. Change one thing at a time and track calls for a few weeks after.

GBP Categories for Electricians FAQs
How many categories should an electrician use on Google Business Profile?
Usually one primary category, Electrician, plus one to three secondary categories for specialties you actively sell and staff for.
Do GBP services help an electrician rank?
Services help Google understand the jobs you do and help customers see them. They work best when they match your categories, website pages and reviews.
Should I put “EV charger installation” in my business name?
No. Adding keywords to your business name goes against Google’s guidelines and can get your profile suspended.
