Google Changed My Business Info: Why It Happens and How to Fix It

When owners ask why Google changed my business info, the answer is usually a user suggestion or Google’s own data.

You log in and your hours are different. Or your phone number, website or category has changed, and you didn’t touch it. Home-service owners run into this constantly. The good news: there is usually a clear reason, and you can fix it.
Why did Google change my business info without asking?
Google changes profile details for three main reasons: a member of the public suggested an edit, Google pulled information from other sources on the web, or Google posted an update on your behalf from an automated call or message. Owners get notified of most changes, but the emails are easy to miss.
Where do these changes come from?
- Suggested edits. Anyone on Google Maps can suggest a change, including competitors and confused customers.
- Other sources. Old directory listings, your website, or data providers with outdated details.
- Google updates. Google says it may post updates to your profile based on automated calls, texts or WhatsApp messages. These show as “Pending” and can take up to 5 business days to review. You can opt out in advanced settings.
How do I see what Google changed?
Open your profile while signed in. Fields Google has updated are usually flagged as “Google updates” or similar in your profile editor. Review each one, accept what is correct, and edit back what is wrong.
How do I stop Google from changing my info again?
- Fix the source. Update any directory, Yelp, Facebook or old website page that still shows the wrong detail.
- Keep your name, address and phone identical everywhere. See our citation services.
- Check your profile weekly and after any big change.
- Turn off Google’s automated update posts if you don’t want them.
- Make sure your website shows the same hours and phone as your profile.
My edit says “not approved.” What now?
Google may reject an owner edit if it conflicts with other sources or breaks a guideline, such as keywords added to the business name. Make one small change at a time, and back it up with matching info on your website. Our guide on changing GBP info safely walks through it.
Can a competitor change my listing?
They can suggest edits, like anyone else. If wrong changes keep coming back, keep screenshots and contact Google Business Profile support through the official help center. Never pay a third party who claims they can “lock” your listing.
