GBP Categories for Plumbers: How to Pick the Right Primary Category – RankAutomate Agency

GBP categories for plumbers decide which searches your profile can rank for.

Your Google Business Profile category is one of the strongest signals Google uses to decide which searches you show up for. Pick the wrong primary category, and you can be invisible for “plumber near me” no matter how many reviews you have.

GBP categories for plumbers: Can changing categories hurt my profile?

This guide covers the questions plumbing owners actually ask about GBP categories, the mistakes we see most, and a simple way to choose.

What is the best primary GBP category for a plumber?

For most plumbing companies, the best primary category is Plumber. Google tells businesses to choose the category that completes the sentence “This business IS a…”, not “This business HAS a…”. If most of your revenue comes from general plumbing calls, Plumber is the match.

Exceptions are rare. A company that only does drain cleaning or only does septic work may fit a narrower category better. Check the live list in your GBP dashboard, because Google adds and renames categories over time.

How many secondary categories should a plumber add?

Usually 1 to 4. Google’s own guideline is to “use as few categories as possible” to describe your core business. Add a secondary category only when customers can hire you for that work on its own, and it is a real, ongoing part of your business.

Categories plumbers commonly consider (confirm exact names in your dashboard):

  • Drainage or drain cleaning service
  • Water heater installation or repair service
  • Septic system service
  • Gas installation service
  • Water treatment or water softening service

Don’t add HVAC, Electrician or Contractor just to catch more searches. If you don’t do that work, those calls will not convert, and you blur what Google thinks you are.

Why does my competitor show up for drain cleaning and I don’t?

Usually because their profile, website and reviews all tell Google they do drain cleaning, and yours only says “plumber.” Category is one part. Google also reads your GBP services list, your website service pages, and the words customers use in reviews.

The fix is consistency across all three:

  1. Add drain cleaning as a secondary category, if it is a real part of your work.
  2. List drain cleaning in your GBP Services section.
  3. Have a dedicated drain cleaning page on your website, not a single line on the homepage.
  4. Ask drain customers for reviews. Many will mention the job in their own words.

I’m a plumber and HVAC company. Which category goes first?

Put whichever trade brings in most of your calls and revenue as primary. The other goes in as a secondary category. If both are large, separate divisions with their own staff, signage and phone line, some companies qualify for separate profiles. Most do not, so check Google’s guidelines before creating a second listing.

Can changing categories hurt my profile?

It can. Plumbing owners regularly report that big edits, like switching the primary category, can send a profile back into review or trigger re-verification. That is not a reason to avoid fixing a wrong category. It is a reason to change one thing at a time and not make several big edits in the same week.

Before you change anything, screenshot your current setup. Then watch your calls and rankings for 2–3 weeks after the change.

Do categories matter more than reviews for Google Maps?

They do different jobs. Google ranks local results on relevance, distance and prominence. Categories drive relevance: whether you show up at all for a search. Reviews feed prominence: how high you rank once you qualify. A plumber with 300 reviews and the wrong category can still miss searches a smaller competitor wins.

A simple category checklist for plumbers

  1. Primary category matches what most customers hire you for.
  2. Each secondary category is work you actively sell and staff for.
  3. Every category has a matching service page on your website.
  4. GBP Services list matches your categories and website.
  5. No categories added only to “catch more calls.”

FAQs

Does Google limit how many categories a plumber can add?

Yes. A profile can have one primary category and a limited number of additional categories. Most plumbers only need one to four in total.

Should I put my city in my GBP category or business name?

No. Categories come from Google’s fixed list, and adding a city or keywords to your business name breaks Google’s guidelines and can get your profile suspended.

How long after changing categories will rankings change?

Changes usually show within days to a few weeks. Track calls and rankings for at least two to three weeks before judging the result.
