“Discovered – currently not indexed” means Google knows the URL but hasn’t crawled it yet, usually because the store is new, has weak internal links, many near-duplicate product pages, or thin descriptions. Link important products from collections and the homepage, write unique descriptions, check your domain redirects and resubmit the sitemap.
Why are my Shopify products not showing on Google?
The usual causes are simple: the store is new and Google hasn’t crawled it yet, the store is still password-protected, products are hidden from the Online Store sales channel, or Google sees many near-identical product pages and chooses to index only some of them.
How do I check which products are indexed?
1. Add your store to Google Search Console and verify the domain.
2. Submit your sitemap: yourstore.co.uk/sitemap.xml (Shopify creates it automatically).
3. Open the Pages report and look at “Crawled – currently not indexed” and “Discovered – currently not indexed”.
4. Use the URL Inspection tool on one product and choose Request indexing.
Common Shopify fixes
– Remove the storefront password under Online Store > Preferences once you’re ready to sell.
– Write unique product descriptions. Copying the supplier’s text, used by hundreds of other shops, is one of the main reasons Google skips product pages.
– Link to products from collections and the homepage, so Google can find them.
– Don’t duplicate products for each colour or size. Use variants on one product instead.
– Check apps and themes that add “noindex” tags or block pages in robots.txt.
How long does indexing take?
For a new store, days to a few weeks. Requesting indexing helps, but it doesn’t guarantee Google will index a page. Pages with thin or copied content may stay out until they’re improved.
Should I use Google Merchant Center too?
Yes. Connecting Shopify to Google Merchant Center through the Google & YouTube app can get products into free Shopping listings, often faster than normal search results.
