Duplicate Google Business Listing? How to Fix It

If you find a duplicate listing, claim it if you can, then mark it as a duplicate or ask Google support to merge it into your main verified profile. Don’t simply delete your main profile, and don’t create a new one. Duplicates split reviews and confuse Google.

How do duplicate Google Business listings happen? Most duplicates are created by accident: a previous owner or an old agency made a profile, Google auto-created one from directory data, or someone in the business set up a second profile with a slightly different name or address. They are common after a move, a rebrand, or a change of phone number.

How do I find duplicate listings? – Search your business name, your phone number and your postcode on Google Maps separately. – Search old names and old addresses if you have moved or rebranded. – Ask staff whether anyone ever created a profile on their own account.

What is the right way to remove a duplicate? 1. If you can claim it, request access, then contact Google Business Profile support and ask them to merge it into your main verified profile. Reviews can sometimes be moved across when the details match. 2. If you can’t claim it, open the listing on Google Maps, choose Suggest an edit, then Close or remove, and select Duplicate of another place. 3. If it is an old location you’ve left, mark it as Moved rather than closed, so Google points customers to the new address.

Keep evidence handy (business rates bill, utility bill, Companies House record) in case support asks for proof.

What shouldn’t I do? Don’t delete your main profile to “start fresh”. You lose your reviews and history, and a new profile can take weeks to settle. Don’t create a new profile to get around a suspension either; Google links duplicates together and that usually makes things worse.

Why does this matter for enquiries? Two profiles split your reviews and photos, show customers different phone numbers or opening hours, and make it harder for Google to trust which one is correct. Once duplicates are merged, your main profile usually shows more consistently for searches near you.
