Switching SEO Agency: A Checklist for UK Owners

Before switching SEO agency, secure owner access to your domain, website, Google Business Profile and analytics, download past reports, check your notice period, and list what the old agency built (pages, links, citations). Then brief the new agency with that list so nothing is lost.

| Step | Done? |
|---|---|
| Owner access to all accounts | ☐ |
| Download reports and task lists | ☐ |
| List pages, links and citations built | ☐ |
| Check contract notice | ☐ |
| Remove old agency’s access after notice | ☐ |
| New agency baseline audit | ☐ |
When is it time to switch SEO agency? Common signs: you can’t see what they do each month, reports show rankings and traffic but not enquiries, results haven’t moved in six months or more, they’re hard to reach, or you don’t have access to your own accounts. If any of these sound familiar, it’s worth getting a second opinion before your next renewal.
Before you cancel, check your contract – Notice period and minimum term – Who owns the website, domain, content and any links built – Whether there are exit fees or charges for transferring the site
Secure your accounts first 1. Make sure you’re the owner, not just a manager, of your Google Business Profile. 2. Get admin access to Google Analytics, Google Search Console and Google Tag Manager. 3. Confirm the domain is registered in your name, and get the login for your registrar. 4. Get admin access to your website and hosting. 5. Note any call tracking numbers. If they belong to the agency, plan the switch so calls aren’t lost.
Do this before you give notice, while relationships are friendly.
