Local SEO (local search engine optimisation) is the work of making your business appear when nearby customers search Google for what you offer, in the Google Maps “map pack” and the normal results. It covers your Google Business Profile, website, business listings and reviews.
Is SEO Paid or Free?
Showing up in Google’s organic and map results is free. You don’t pay Google per click. But the work takes time or money, either your own or a professional’s. Google Ads, by contrast, charges for each click.
How is local SEO different from normal SEO?
Normal SEO aims to rank a website across the whole country, often for information searches. Local SEO focuses on searches with local intent, such as “electrician Bedford” or “dentist near me”, where Google shows a map with three businesses and then the organic results. For a business that serves customers in one area, local SEO is usually where the enquiries come from.
What does local SEO actually involve?
– Google Business Profile: the right categories, services, photos, hours and a steady flow of genuine reviews.
– Your website: a clear page for each main service and each main town you cover, fast on mobile, with your name, address and phone number matching your profile.
– Citations: consistent listings on sites such as Yell, Thomson Local, Bing Places, Apple Business Connect and trade directories.
– Local links and mentions: local news, suppliers, associations and community groups linking to you.
– Tracking: knowing which calls, forms and WhatsApp messages came from Google.
Who needs local SEO in the UK?
Any business where customers come to you or you go to them: trades, cleaners, removal firms, solicitors, estate agents, clinics, salons, restaurants and shops. If your customers search with a town name or “near me”, it applies to you.
How long does local SEO take?
Fixing the profile and website basics often shows movement within weeks. Ranking in a competitive area usually takes three to six months of steady work, and longer in large cities. Anyone promising first place on Google Maps by a certain date can’t control that, because Google doesn’t sell Maps rankings.
Can I do local SEO myself?
Yes, the basics are very doable: complete your profile, ask every customer for a review, and keep your details consistent. An agency is worth it when you don’t have the time, when competitors are clearly ahead, or when you need proper tracking to see what’s paying off.
